Five Rules for a Lettering Tattoo You'll Love Forever
- Check the spelling three times. Then ask someone else to check it. For foreign-language text, confirm the translation with a native speaker, not just an online translator.
- Don't go too small. Letters, especially loops like e, a and o, close up over time if they're tiny. Björn will suggest a minimum size that stays readable.
- Fewer words, more impact. A short phrase at a good size usually looks better than a long paragraph squeezed in.
- Match the font to the meaning. A child's name in heavy gothic letters sends a very different message from the same name in delicate script.
- Think about the flow. Text on the ribs, spine or collarbone should follow the body's curves, not fight them.
Turning Handwriting into a Tattoo
One of the most meaningful lettering tattoos you can get is a loved one's own handwriting: a signature, “love, Mum”, a line from a birthday card. Bring or send a clear photo of the original. Björn will clean it up carefully, keeping the character of the writing while making sure it will tattoo cleanly and stay readable.
Lettering as Part of a Bigger Piece
Script often works best as part of something larger: a banner in a blackwork design, a name under a portrait, a date woven into botanicals. If you'd like your text to sit within a bigger composition, mention that at the custom design stage so it's planned from the start.
