What “Custom” Really Means at Oxygen Ink
A lot of studios call a tattoo “custom” when they change the colour of a design you found online. At Oxygen Ink it means something different: Björn draws the design from scratch, for your body, after he has listened to what the tattoo is supposed to mean to you. Nothing is copied, and nothing you get here will be tattooed on anyone else.
That approach is the foundation of the studio. Björn opened his first Oxygen Ink studio in Cologne in 2003 and brought the same way of working to the Costa del Sol in 2024. Our studio in Calahonda is set up for one client at a time, so the design process never gets squeezed between walk-ins.
How the Custom Design Process Works
1. The idea and the story
Most people start with a feeling rather than a finished picture: a person they want to honour, a place that changed them, an animal, a quote, a symbol from their culture. Tell us that story on WhatsApp or in person. The more Björn understands why you want the tattoo, the better the drawing becomes.
2. References and placement
Send a few reference images and, importantly, a photo of the part of the body you have in mind. Placement shapes a design as much as the subject does. A piece that flows along a forearm is composed differently from one that sits on a shoulder blade or wraps around a calf.
3. The drawing
Björn sketches the design by hand and adapts it to the size, the muscle lines and the style you've chosen, whether that's realism, fine line, blackwork or a mix. You'll see the design before the session and you can ask for changes until it feels right.
4. The session
On the day, the stencil is placed and checked with you in the mirror before a single line goes in. Then you relax in a private, clean studio while the piece comes to life. Larger pieces are split into several sessions so your skin heals well between them.
Why a Custom Tattoo Is Worth It
- It fits your body. A design drawn for your arm, back or ribs moves with you instead of sitting on top of you like a sticker.
- It ages better. An experienced artist knows how lines spread and how shading softens over the years, and designs with that in mind. Tiny details that look great on a screen can blur after a few summers in the Andalusian sun; a good custom design avoids that from the start.
- It's yours alone. Nobody else will walk down the Paseo Marítimo with the same piece.
- It can grow. Many clients start with one piece and later extend it into a half sleeve or full sleeve. Planning that from day one keeps the whole thing coherent.

What to Bring to Your Consultation
- Two to five reference images showing the mood or subject you like
- A photo of the placement area, ideally in good daylight
- A rough idea of size (a hand span, a palm, a full forearm)
- Any photos you want included, such as a portrait, a handwritten note or a pet
- Your timing, especially if you are on holiday on the Costa del Sol and flying home soon
Visiting on holiday? Get in touch before you arrive. Björn can finish the drawing while you travel, so you can be tattooed early in your stay and still have time to follow the aftercare advice before the beach and the pool.
